In 2009, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger successfully landed a commercial airliner on New York’s Hudson River that had sustained engine failure after striking a flock of geese upon takeoff.  Remarkably, all 150 passengers and five crew members survived. This incident continues to draw public attention to the threat of bird strikes faced by airports across the nation.

On December 1, the Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) recognized Schultz for his dedication, and Airport Manager Flora Margheritis presented Schultz with a certificate of commendation on behalf of Los Angeles World Airports and local elected officials during the CAC meeting on October 6.

Have Questions? Ask a VNY Expert! - 12/7/2016 04:30:08 PM

Do you know the difference between general aviation and commercial airports? What happens behind the hangar doors at the world’s busiest general aviation airport? What famous flyers and record-breaking flights are found in VNY’s 88-year history?

In an effort to further address and mitigate concerns of airport safety, LAWA and VNY tenants have laid the foundation for the creation of a Safety and Security Committee for members of the VNY aviation community.

The Civil Air Patrol’s (CAP) Los Angeles County Group 1 recently honored three members of the VNY-based Hawker Senior Squadron 128 for excellence. The squadron houses a specially-equipped Cessna 182 Skylane on the airfield to maintain mission readiness.

On November 18, Clay Lacy Aviation hosted a celebration of life event honoring famous military test and aerobatic stunt pilot Bob Hoover.  More than 1,000 guests shared fond remembrances and viewed flyovers honoring Hoover, who died on Oct. 25 at age 94. Hoover was a friend of VNY and made an indelible impact on the global aviation industry. A member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, he flew over 300 aircraft types and flight tested or flew nearly every type of fighter aircraft.

Last September, Clay Lacy Aviation announced that will merge with Key Air, an aircraft management and charter company based in Oxford, Connecticut. Their combined resources will benefit new and current clients with expanded support services and access to a nationwide charter fleet.

Van Nuys Airport urges pilots to comply with its “No Early Turn” policy to proactively reduce the impact of airport operations on the community. With 24-hour monitoring, this noise mitigation program detects pilots who turn too early after departure and fly over adjacent residential areas.
